EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy used to support people experiencing trauma, anxiety, stress, and other emotional difficulties. It can help individuals process distressing experiences and reduce the impact these have on day-to-day life.
You can learn more about EMDR and how it works on our EMDR page. (https://www.positiveoutcomespsychology.com/emdr-therapy)
Before your first session, you will be asked to complete some administrative forms to ensure your information is recorded securely. The initial sessions primarily involve a history intake, during which your psychologist takes time to understand your personal circumstances, difficulties, and goals for therapy. During this process, you may also be asked to complete assessment forms to help establish the unique needs of each client.
This process takes place in a safe, relaxed, and confidential environment. Our psychologists use evidence-based approaches and work with compassion and respect. As every individual is different, there is no “typical” therapy session, and support is tailored to each individual’s needs.
Sessions are typically between 50 and 60 minutes. Longer sessions may be available as requested and discussed with your psychologist
You do not need a referral to see a psychologist. However, to access Medicare rebates, a referral from a General Practitioner or Psychiatrist is required. If you are referred by a third party (e.g., WorkCover), referral information must be provided when making your appointment.
Under the federal government’s Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative, eligible clients can receive a rebate from Medicare for psychological services. To qualify, your General Practitioner or Psychiatrist must assess you and provide a Mental Health Care Plan, after which you can be referred to a psychologist. Once a Mental Health Care Plan has been completed, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
We understand that clients are often concerned about privacy and confidentiality. Any information disclosed to us, for example case notes, records, and psychological test results, is kept confidential and cannot be shared without your consent.
If it becomes necessary to share information with another professional, you will be consulted first and asked to sign a release of information. There are some legal limitations to confidentiality, which can be discussed with your psychologist.
